Australian Esports League Monthly Update – September 2024

Welcome to the September edition of the AEL newsletter! As we approach the final quarter of 2024, it’s been a busy and exciting month for the AEL, with incredible events and ongoing competitions.

This month we launched our epic partnership with the Australian Open and announced the AO Schools Block Buster Tennis Challenge, a new and unique Minecraft Education event that challenges students to re-imagine the Australian Open! We’ve seen intense competitive play across our High School and University leagues which you can re-watch the action on our Twitch or Facebook channels. PLUS we hosted two awesome activations at Oz Comic-Con in Brisbane and Sydney!

Recent AEL Events

AEL High Schools Cup Term 3 – Recap: Term 3 of the AEL High Schools Cup has wrapped up, and it’s been another thrilling season of esports action across Australia! Congratulations to all teams for their dedication and sportsmanship. You can catch detailed results on our social media, let’s celebrate our champions!

  • In Overwatch 2 the Division 1 winner was Kelvin Grove State College!
  • In Rocket League the Division 1 winner was St Peter Claver College!
  • In Minecraft: Capture the Flag the winner was St Peter’s Lutheran College
  • In Trackmania the ultimate racer was “TheBeefLessCow” from Pacific Pines State High
  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate the champion was “BowlOfRamen” from St Luke’s Catholic College

Term 4 is just around the corner, with registrations open until October 25th. Schools can sign up for their chance to compete in some of the most exciting games in esports. For more information and to register your school, visit our High Schools Cup page.

Oz Comic-Con Brisbane and OZ Comic-Con Sydney: The AEL made its mark in Brisbane on September 14-15 and in Sydney on September 21-22 with our gaming activation, where we brought the action to the show floor with our AEL Gaming Zone! Fans and attendees had the opportunity to experience some free play gaming action all weekend, meet our team, and get involved in community pick-up tournaments.

Upcoming AEL Events

2024 AEL University Cup Series 2: The stakes are rising as we head into the playoffs for both the AEL University Cup and the AEL Elite Series. Teams have battled through tough competition, and now, the best will compete for the championship titles.

The finals will take place on October 21st, where teams will fight for top honours and prizes. Keep an eye on our socials for announcements and updates and how to watch the action live! We wish all University students competing the best of luck.

2024 AEL Schools Minecraft Competition – Series 2: This series is well underway, and we’re already seeing some creative and innovative submissions from students across Australia. All student submissions are due by October 18th with marking taking place until the winner’s are announced November 4th!

This series focuses on three themes: Mythic Australia (Years 4-6), Designing for Accessibility (Years 7-9), and The Global Challenge (Years 10-12). Each category presents a unique opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and problem-solving skills. Learn more about the challenge here.

AO Schools Block Buster Tennis Challenge: Don’t miss out on your chance to participate in this exciting Minecraft competition, we are challenging schools and solo entrants to reimagine the Australian Open precinct with a focus on sustainability, accessibility, and innovation. AEL University League Update!

As we prepare for Season 2 of the 2024 AEL University competition, let’s take a moment to reflect on the highlights and achievements of Season 1 earlier this year.

This season saw Universities pick-up Counter-Strike 2, alongside the perennial favorite Rocket League. Both games hosted thrilling competitions in Open and Elite divisions, featuring over 50 university teams from across Australia.

The Elite Series is a clubs representative model with participating universities submitting their best squad to compete against one another, whilst the Open broadens competition to all University students of all skill levels across Australia.

Season 1 Highlights

Rocket League – Elite Division

  1. 1st Place: UNSW Sydney (tatagane, Digs, SSteve, kamicaazi)
  2. 2nd Place: Griffith University (Ados, ultraviolet, bcexile, Cheeky)
  3. 3rd Place: Queensland University of Technology (Jackactually, Jackko, Mack, Front, Mr Growths)

Rocket League – Open Division

  1. 1st Place: UQ Union
  2. 2nd Place: UTS Engineers
  3. 3rd Place: USYD Sigma Sydney

Counter-Strike – Elite Division

  1. 1st Place: RMIT University (Roflko, Mayker, lucas222, Lyme, Lev1ne, Kayoh)

A huge congratulations to all our winners, who not only earned bragging rights but also took home a share of over $7,000 in prizes.

Clubs must complete registration to the Elite Series by the 11th August whilst all Uni students looking to participate in the Open must register by the 18th August.

AEL University Elite Series Season 2 Kicks Off with Top Universities in Esports Showdown

As esports continues to rise in popularity, eight top-tier universities are all set to showcase their prowess, battling it out in the adrenaline-pumping realm of electronic sports.

This much-anticipated series will see club representatives from each university go head-to-head in a multi-week tournament, culminating in a grand finale where the title of “Esports University Champion” awaits the victor.

Get Ready for an Exciting Season of Esports with the AEL University Cup!

Are you a university student with a passion for esports and gaming culture? Then get ready to put your skills to the test, because the AEL University Cup is back for its 2023 season, and it’s bigger and better than ever!

Since its inception in 2017, the AEL University Cup has been providing students from all over Australia with a structured and well-governed tournament to showcase their gaming abilities. With a total of over 3000 participants from 28 different universities over the years, the AEL University Cup has established itself as one of the leading esports tournaments in the country.

Over 200 matches have taken place in the past, featuring games like Rocket League, CS:GO, Rainbow Six Siege, Dota 2, World of Tanks, Tekken 7, SSBU, and many more. The matches take place once a week, with selected games broadcasted online, providing students with the opportunity to reach a wider audience and showcase their skills.

The AEL University Cup offers a prize pool of over $3500, spread across two seasons, making it not only a competition for aspiring players but also for those who are interested in the production, casting, observing, and competing aspects of the tournament. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or just starting out, there’s something for everyone.

So what are you waiting for? Registrations for Season 1 2023 are now open, and they close on March 20th. The first matches will take place on March 27th, so gather your team and get ready to game on!

Upcoming Events 2023

Are you a gaming enthusiast looking for your next fix? Look no further! The AEL is excited to announce our upcoming Esports events for the year. We have a lineup of exciting and engaging events that will cater to gamers of all skill levels and interests. From esports tournaments to conventions, we have something for everyone. So mark your calendars and get ready for a year of non-stop gaming action. Whether you’re a hardcore gamer or just looking for some fun, our events are sure to be a hit. So, come and join us!

To kick off the year the AEL University Cup will be opening up registrations February 1st with tournaments beginning March 16th. The tournament will feature Rocket League and CS:GO in the division 1 league with Rainbow Six Siege, Dota 2 and others TBD in the open series which is played monthly. The AEL Uni Cup will run for several weeks with matches taking place on designated days and times TBD. Season 2 of the AEL Uni Cup will begin taking registrations in July with tournaments beginning in August featuring the same games as Season 1 with more TBD.

Next up we have 2 new and exciting additions, The Acer High School Summer Series powered by Predator and The Acer High School Spring Series powered by Predator! These tournaments will feature some of the most popular gaming titles such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Overwatch 2 and Rocket League with an extra game to be announced soon. The Acer High School Cup powered by Predator will take place in between the Summer and Spring series, starting in Term 2 with registrations closing May 2nd. Qualifying teams will continue the competition in Term 3 with tournaments beginning in August. Registrations for the Summer Series close February 20th with tournaments beginning February 27th while registrations for the Spring Series close September 15th with tournaments beginning October 16th.

In addition, the AEL will be heading to Goulburn Comic Con 18 – 19th March, where we will be hosting a free play gaming zone and the Goulburn Cup with tournaments TBD. This will be followed by the Logan Cup 25 – 26th March which will also feature a free play gaming zone with tournaments TBD.

Finally, the AEL will be heading to Oz Comic Con:

  • Perth 1st – 2nd April
  • Adelaide 3rd – 4th June
  • Melbourne 10th – 11th June
  • Canberra 5th – 6th August
  • Brisbane 16th – 17th September
  • Sydney 23rd – 24th September

The AEL area will feature a free play area and tournament zone with tournaments TBD. As part of the convention, we will also have booths where attendees can check out the latest gaming gear and merchandise, as well as meet our team members and learn more about our company.

We can’t wait for our upcoming events and can’t wait for you to join us. Whether you’re a competitive gamer looking to test your skills or just looking for some fun, we have something for everyone. Australian Esports University League Registrations now open for Season 1 2022!

Registrations are now open for Season 1 of the 2022 Australian Esports University League (AEUL), which last year saw thousands of students compete across several titles.  

Students from across Australia, representing their University, are competing in the AEL’s national University league in Dota 2, CS:GO, Rocket League, Rainbow 6: Siege and World of Tanks to win a share of the $13,225 Prize Pool and bragging rights as the strongest university in esports! 

Participating students will complete online with matches broadcast live on to the AEL’s Facebook & Twitch covering over 100 hours of match play this Season. 

In 2022 the AEUL is proudly supported by a number of partners who share a passion for gaming and esports in Australia. These partners are:

Registrations for Semester 1 are in for the 2021 Australian Esports University League (AEUL) featuring a total of 564 Students forming 110 Teams from 28 Universities across 4 Games!

Students from across Australia, representing their University, are competing in the AEL’s national University league in Dota 2, CS:GO, Rocket League and Rainbow 6: Siege to win a share of the $10,350 Prize Pool and bragging rights as the strongest university in esports!

Participating students will complete online with matches broadcast live on to the AEL’s Facebook page covering over 100 hours of match play this Semester.

In 2021 the AEUL is proudly supported by a number of partners who share a passion for gaming and esports in Australia. These partners are:
