2020 Palmy Cup & Webinars

The City of Palmerston has teamed up with the AEL to run two free community webinars: How to get into Cosplay and How to become an Esports Competitor; and hold their first ever AEL Palmy Cup. These webinars and the cup will be offered to all NT residents to participate and aims to encourage participation in future Geekfest Top End Events.

Join the action in the Palmy Cup 2020, an exciting esports series coming to the Northern Territory this June! Sign-up today and compete in the Palmy Cup across Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or Rocket League for your chance to win a share of $500 per game.

The 2020 Palmy Cup

The inaugural 2020 Palmy Cup presented by the City of Palmerston is a free to participate online competition available to all residents of the NT!

Competition will play over four weeks featuring solo’s (1v1) in Super Smash Bro’s Ultimate and Rocket League.

There is a $500 prize pool on offer for each game and the AEL has something special in store for the best play of the event!

Participate for some fun, meet like-minded players and prove you are the best of the best to be crowned the City of Palmerston’s Palmy Cup champion of 2020!

Format

The tournament will be split into 2 stages:

Stage 1 Groups: Players are seeded into groups and will play a round robin within their group

Stage 2 Playoffs: The top players from each group (8 total) will be seeded into and play through a double elimination bracket to determine the ultimate winner

This tournament is not affiliated with or sponsored by Psyonix LLC or its licensors, Nintendo Co., Ltd or its licensors.

Join in the 1 v 1 Rocket League tournament today, available Cross platform (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC).

When:

Every Wednesday starting 17th June until 8th July from 6:30pm ACST
Finals will be held Sunday the 12th July from 11:00am ACST
Registrations close same day at 6:00pm ACST

Prizes:

1st: $300
2nd: $150
3rd: $50

How to get into cosplay

Join Punzie and Whereisdanielle to learn about the world of Cosplay where you step into the shoes (and costume) of your favourite super hero, anime character or video game character! In this webinar you???ll get insights about where to begin, what kind of materials to use, where you can get materials from, tips and tricks in pulling your costume together and the importance of having fun with your role play.

Whereisdanielle is globally renown for her Overwatch and Halo creations, and has built a reputation with industry working officially for Blizzard and showing casing her passion for popular video game characters.

How to become an Esports Competitor

Interested in esports? Interested in learning about the player side of competitive gaming???Join HeyKatie and Doctor as they talk about esports and provide an insight into playing competitive video games.

Heykatie is a competitive FPS player who has travelled internationally and competed in some of the biggest tournaments around the world. Heykatie has been playing professionally since 2010 and is still going strong as he competes in local Valorant tournaments and coaches individual players.

Doctor, previously a player himself, has coached teams and is now the general manager for Warriors Esports, the esports division of the New Zealand Warriors. Is the AEL Palmy Cup open to anyone?

This event is open to all residents of the Northern Territory who are aged 13 years or older, those under the age of 16 we kindly request they obtain their parental permission to participate.

How many players can register?

There is no limit to how many can participate, so feel free to sign-up today and invite some friends along as well!

The games you've chosen are amazing, but what if I play something else?

Never played Smash or Rocket League and think you may actually like it? Don’t be afraid. Sign up anyway. We won’t judge.

In the future we may have other games on offer, follow our socials to hear about any future tournaments.

And exactly how does one win the AEL Palmy Cup?

It’s a numbers game.

Players will compete for points in their respective groups by winning against their opponents. The best in each group will advance to the top-8 playoffs and complete a double elimination. The ultimate winner is decided by who can beat all their opponents.
